The best Outdoor Research rain jacket for most people is the Foray 3L for men or the Aspire 3L for women: a 3-layer AscentShell Dry shell rated at 20,000 mm with hip-to-bicep TorsoFlo vents, usually priced between $190 and $260. If weight matters more than anything, the new Outdoor Research Helium UL, which replaced the Helium Rain jacket for 2026, weighs only about 5.7 ounces and is the lightest emergency shell in the lineup.

The Outdoor Research rain gear lineup in 2026

Outdoor Research (OR) splits its rain jackets into two clear roles. The Foray 3L and Aspire 3L are full-featured hiking and everyday shells built around ventilation. The Helium family is ultralight, designed to be carried just in case. Knowing which role you need is more important than comparing spec sheets.

A note on names: the long-running Outdoor Research Helium Rain Jacket has been replaced by the Helium UL. You may still find the older Helium Rain on clearance, so check which version a listing refers to.

Foray 3L and Outdoor Research Aspire 3L: the best all-rounders

The Foray and the women’s Outdoor Research Aspire are the same design in different cuts. Their signature feature is TorsoFlo: long two-way zips running from the hip to the upper arm. Open them partway and they act like oversized pit zips; open them fully and the jacket becomes almost a poncho, dumping heat on steep climbs while the hood and shoulders keep rain off. That is a big advantage in warm rain, where a closed jacket feels like a sauna.

The current version switched from 2-layer GORE-TEX Paclite to OR’s own 3-layer AscentShell Dry, which is more durable and feels less clammy against skin. It uses a mechanical stretch fabric, so it moves well when scrambling or reaching for trekking poles, and it has a PFC-free Nikwax Direct.Dry finish.

Trade-offs: the long zips add weight and hardware, making this one of the heavier 3-layer jackets in its class. It is not designed for days of severe, wind-driven alpine weather; it is a hiking and everyday jacket first. Plus sizes of the Aspire 3L are offered through some retailers, which is uncommon for technical shells.

Outdoor Research Helium UL: the ultralight backup

The Helium UL is for trail runners, fastpackers and hikers who carry a rain shell “in case” rather than expecting to wear it all day. At about 5.7 ounces, it is roughly a third of the Foray’s weight and packs down very small. The thin 15-denier fabric is less abrasion resistant, there is no venting beyond the main zip, and breathability on long climbs is limited. If you expect hours of steady rain, it is the wrong tool; if you want minimal weight for summer thunderstorms, it is one of the best in its class.

Which Outdoor Research rain jacket fits your use?

Situation Pick Reason
All-day hiking in warm, humid rain Foray 3L / Aspire 3L TorsoFlo venting manages sweat
Everyday jacket for rainy commutes Foray 3L / Aspire 3L Durable 3-layer fabric, good hood
Trail running or fastpacking Helium UL About 5.7 oz, packs tiny
Summer backpacking with dry forecast Helium UL Emergency protection with little weight
Plus size women’s hiking shell Aspire 3L (plus) Rare plus availability in a 3-layer shell

Weight vs protection: a simple way to decide

Ask how many hours per trip you expect to wear the jacket. If the answer is under an hour on most trips, the Helium UL saves about 8 to 9 ounces over the Foray, which is noticeable for runners. If you expect to wear it for three or more hours at a time, the Foray’s venting and tougher 3-layer fabric will keep you drier overall, because sweat buildup inside a non-vented ultralight shell often soaks you as much as the rain would.

Sizing and fit

The Foray and Aspire have a regular fit with room for a light fleece. The Aspire is shaped through the waist and hip. The Helium UL is trimmer and intended to go over a base layer or thin midlayer; size up if you want to wear it over a puffy.

Care and longevity of OR rain gear

  • Keep the DWR fresh. When the face fabric darkens with water, wash with a technical cleaner and reapply a water-repellent treatment. The Foray’s Nikwax finish responds well to wash-in or spray-on Nikwax products.
  • Zipper care. TorsoFlo zips are long; rinse grit out after muddy hikes and close them before washing to protect the sliders.
  • Handle the Helium gently. Avoid wearing a heavy pack with sharp edges against thin fabrics, and patch small holes promptly with gear repair tape.

For the widest range of conditions, the Foray 3L or Aspire 3L is the Outdoor Research rain gear to buy; add a Helium UL only if you also need an ultralight backup.
