The best fishing rain gear depends on whether you stand on a boat or move along a river: for boat and offshore fishing, a PVC jacket such as the Grundens Neptune 319 is the most reliably waterproof and durable for the money; for budget charter trips, the Grundens Weather Watch jacket and bib set covers most anglers; and for wading and fly fishing, the breathable Simms Challenger is the best fishing rain jacket because it cuts short to sit above waders. Hiking rain jackets rarely hold up to fish slime, hooks, sunscreen and salt, which is why fishing rain gear is built differently.

What makes fishing rain gear different

Anglers face a mix of conditions that general rain jackets are not designed for: spray from the bow, constant arm movement while casting, hooks and fins snagging fabric, and long periods standing still in cold wind. Three construction types dominate:

  • PVC or polyurethane-coated fabric with welded seams (Grundens Neptune 319). Completely waterproof, very tough and easy to hose clean, but not breathable.
  • Coated nylon with a laminate and taped seams (Grundens Weather Watch). Lighter and cheaper, modest breathability, aimed at charter and recreational boat use.
  • Breathable stretch laminates (Simms Challenger). Comfortable when hiking to a spot or casting all day, but needs more care and costs more.

Fishing rain jackets compared

Jacket Construction Waterproof / breathability Seams Best for Typical price
Grundens Neptune 319 230 g/m² PU-coated stretch polyester Fully waterproof; not breathable RF welded Boat, offshore, commercial-style use $90–$120
Grundens Weather Watch 420D nylon Oxford, PU film laminate 10,000 mm / 5,000 g/m² Fully taped Charters, budget boat fishing About $90 (jacket); about $140 with bibs
Simms Challenger Recycled nylon/spandex stretch laminate Waterproof-breathable Taped Wading, fly fishing, all-day casting $230–$360 (men’s), around $330 (women’s)
Huk Gunwale Lightweight waterproof shell Waterproof Fully taped Inshore, warm-weather showers About $110

Picks by fishing style

Best for boat fishing in heavy weather: Grundens Neptune 319

The Neptune 319 is Grundens rain gear at its most practical: a stretch PU-coated fabric with RF-welded seams, an attached hood, and a 4-way stretch cut that moves with you when you lean over the rail. Because nothing passes through the fabric, it is 100% waterproof, and fish blood or slime wipes off with a hose. The downside is heat: on warm days or when you are hauling gear, you will sweat inside. Many anglers in cold northern waters use the same Neptune for years, which makes it excellent value.

Best budget charter set: Grundens Weather Watch

The Weather Watch uses a 420-denier nylon Oxford face with a PU laminate and fully taped seams, rated at 10,000 mm. A 2025 update moved it to a PFAS-free finish. Its breathability (5,000 g/m²) is low, but that matters less when you spend most of the trip standing at the rail. For anglers who fish a handful of charters a year, the jacket and bib combination offers the most protection per dollar.

Best for wading and fly fishing: Simms Challenger

The Simms rain jacket most anglers start with is the Challenger. It is cut to work over chest waders, has fleece-lined hand-warmer pockets and uses a stretch laminate that allows a full casting stroke. The current version uses recycled nylon with spandex, and a medium weighs about 23 ounces. One practical caution: the pocket interiors are not fully waterproof, so keep them zipped in heavy rain. An insulated Challenger version is available for cold-season steelhead and winter trout.

Lightweight inshore option: Huk Gunwale

For warm-weather inshore fishing, the Huk Gunwale offers fully taped seams, a storm flap, an adjustable hood and a packable design. It is not a heavy-weather jacket, but it stows easily in a console for passing squalls.

Jacket alone or jacket plus bibs?

On a boat, water comes from below as much as above: spray, a wet deck and fish on your lap. Bibs (high-waisted rain pants with shoulder straps) keep your torso dry even when the jacket rides up while you reel. A good rule of thumb:

  • Offshore, open boats, or cold water: jacket plus bibs, ideally from the same line so the overlap seals well.
  • Inshore or covered boats: jacket alone is often enough, with quick-dry pants.
  • Wading: a short jacket over waders; no bibs needed.

Waterproof fishing jacket features that matter

  • Brimmed hood that turns with your head. Essential for watching a rod tip or line while rain blows sideways.
  • Neoprene or hook-and-loop cuffs. Stop water running down your sleeves when you lift fish or reach into a livewell.
  • High collar. Blocks spray when running across chop.
  • Hi-vis colors. Bright yellow or orange improves visibility in a man-overboard situation. Many PVC fishing jackets come in hi-vis options.
  • Length. Wading jackets are cut short to clear the water; boat jackets are longer to overlap bibs.

Cost per trip: PVC vs breathable

Suppose you fish 25 days a year. A $110 PVC jacket that lasts five seasons costs about $0.88 per day of fishing. A $330 breathable wading jacket that lasts four seasons costs about $3.30 per day. If you fish from a boat and do not walk much, the PVC jacket is the clear value. If you hike to river spots or cast all day, the comfort of a breathable jacket is worth the extra.

Care: salt, sunscreen and fish slime

  • Rinse after every trip with fresh water, especially after saltwater fishing; salt crystals abrade fabrics and corrode zippers.
  • Clean off sunscreen and bug spray. Solvents in some repellents can damage coatings and DWR finishes on breathable jackets.
  • Dry hanging, not folded. Folding PVC gear while wet causes cracking along creases and mildew.
  • Re-treat breathable jackets. When the face fabric wets out, wash with a technical cleaner and reapply DWR.

For most boat anglers, PVC fishing rain gear like the Grundens Neptune is the best balance of price and protection; for anglers on foot, the Simms Challenger is the waterproof fishing jacket to beat.
